The UK loses nearly four minutes of daylight a day in September 2026. When the nights really start drawing in, the exact dates, and how fast it happens.
Technically, the nights started drawing in on 22 June. Nobody noticed, because in the days right after the solstice the UK loses a matter of seconds of daylight a day and there is still light in the sky at half ten at night.
The point at which people actually notice is now. In mid August, London is losing roughly three and a half minutes of daylight every single day, and by the middle of September that has risen to almost four minutes. That is the difference between a change you can measure and a change you can feel on the walk home.
Here is exactly what happens between now and the end of October, with real sunrise and sunset times rather than vague talk about the evenings closing in.

Between today and the end of September, London loses almost exactly three hours of daylight. Most of that comes off the evening rather than the morning: sunset moves forward by an hour and forty five minutes over the same period, while sunrise slips back by an hour and sixteen minutes.
That asymmetry is why the change feels so abrupt. Mornings get darker gradually and you are usually indoors anyway. Evenings get darker faster, and that is when you are outside noticing it.

Edinburgh is losing about four minutes thirty five seconds a day through September against London's three minutes fifty three. Over the month that is an extra twenty minutes of darkness. Note also that all three places land within four minutes of each other by 30 September, having been half an hour apart in mid August. Autumn is the great leveller; by midwinter the gap opens up the other way, with Edinburgh down to seven hours two minutes on the shortest day against London's seven hours fifty three.
The Equinox Is Not the Day of Equal Light
The autumn equinox falls on Wednesday 23 September 2026. The word means equal night, and the standard explanation is that day and night are the same length.
They are not, quite. On 23 September London gets 12 hours 12 minutes of daylight, not 12 hours. There are two reasons for the discrepancy, and both work in the same direction.
First, sunrise and sunset are defined by the moment the top edge of the sun touches the horizon, not its centre. That gains you a few minutes at each end. Second, the atmosphere bends light, so you can see the sun when it is still geometrically below the horizon.

In daylight terms, almost nothing happens that day. London loses its usual three and a bit minutes. What changes is where the daylight sits on the clock. Sunset in London goes from 17:50 on the Saturday to 16:48 on the Sunday. Edinburgh drops from 17:52 to 16:50, Manchester from 17:55 to 16:53.
You gain an hour in bed and lose an hour of usable evening, in one night, with no warning from the sky. This is the single most jarring moment of the British autumn, and it is entirely an artefact of the clock rather than the sun. Two practical things. If you walk, run or cycle without lights, work out now which week your usual route stops being viable rather than discovering it in the dark. In London a 6pm finish still has daylight until roughly the last week of September, then does not again until March.
And if you have outdoor jobs pending, the useful evening hours are disappearing at nearly four minutes a day. The gutters, the fence, the last cut of the lawn: they are all easier in the first half of September than the second. After 25 October they become weekend jobs whether you like it or not.
